Prof. Dr. Andreas Dengel

Scientific Director, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI)

Professor Dr. Andreas Dengel is a member of the executive board and is also the Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Furthermore, he oversees the research area "Knowledge Management" at the DFKI, and is the Site Manager of the DFKI in Kaiserslautern. Since 1993, he has been a Professor for Computer Science at TU Kaiserslautern and has also been the leader of the project group "Knowledge-Based Systems". Since 2009, Andreas Dengel has also been a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Intelligent Systems at the Graduate School of Engineering of the Osaka Prefecture University in Japan. In the last few years, he has either founded or initiated more than half a dozen start-up companies.

Between 1980 and 1986 Andreas Dengel studied computer science and economics at TU Kaiserslautern. He then worked in the Siemens research laboratory in Munich and at the University of Stuttgart, where he finished his PhD in 1989. He also worked as a Postdoc at Xerox in Palo Alto, California.

He is a member of various international advisory boards and publisher of international scientific magazines. In addition, he regularly works as an expert for the Scientific Advisory Council of the German Federal Government, the DFG (German Research Foundation), and various other international scientific organizations.

Professor Dengel is a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). He is the author of more than 350 international publications and has received numerous awards for his scientific contributions. His scientific focus is on the areas of machine learning, pattern recognition, information retrieval, multimedia mining, social media, and semantic technologies.
